Sugar roses, oh my!

Hello Everyone:

Ever wondered how much time it would take to make 435 sugar roses? Two and a half weeks. Each rose, hand done on this cake was made to match the bride's wedding color. I must say it was a spectacular event. The cake serve over 350 people. The bottom tier itself is an 18 inch square. The cake weighed 140 pounds. The size of a small human being. The event was held on the family's property just outside of Franklin, Tennessee at the end of June, 2010. Absolutely stunning event.

This cake is a buttercream cake (below) that went to the Hermitage Golf Course (http://www.hermitagegolf.com/), in Old Hickory, Tennessee. The event was a One Source Weddings (http://www.onesourceweddings.net)event/ spear headed by Wendy Binns. The cake has satin ribbon around the base of each tier that matched the bride's turquoise color and a light taupe color icing accent touched with edible glitter. The topper is fresh flowers supplied by One Source Weddings.

The buttercream cake (below) is also a One Source Wedding (http://www.onesourceweddings.net/) event held in Lebanon at The Mill (http://www.themillatlebanon.com/). The colors from her wedding are reflected in the ribbons around the base of each tier. The buttercream is deliberately not smooth to pick up the rustic elements in the hall. Fresh flowers were applied at a later time by One Source.

This lovely fondant cake (below) is embossed with swirls painted pearl on the bottom and 2nd tier from the top. The alternating tiers have a white filigree touched with edible glitter and small tweedia sugar flowers. The sugar flowers on the cake matched her fresh flowers...they are small blue tweedia (the bride's favorite) and white mums. The event was held at The Spring Hill Union Hall in Spring Hill, Tennessee (uawlocal1853.org/union-hall).

Adding some images of cakes that are still from June and some that are a little older that we still just love.

This cake with the cascade of purple flowers was for a couple who held their reception in their back yard. The roses are handmade with two colors of her light purple. The background is a deep ivory with light ivory designs around the center of each tier. The bottom tier is a square with two round tiers on top. Such a sweet cake for a perfect backyard reception.

This groom's cake (below) is Hans Solo in Carbonite.
The couple was so sweet....we loved working with them.
Their wedding cake will show up in another blog.
The cake is covered in rolled chocolate and highlighted in silver.
By the way, ignore the date on the cake, it was just this year....not 2008 (ha ha).

This cake was a year or so ago. It was delivered to The Hermitage Hotel (www.thehermitagehotel.com). It is just simply one of our favorites. It has a hexagon shaped bottom tier with round tiers on top. There are two different shades of ivory on the sides of the tier separated by a gentle gold colored vine with leaves and Wimsey flowers. The topper for the cake was sugar flowers, hydrangeas, orchids and roses. The coordinator was Alice Hendry (www.alicehendry.com). The photographer for the event was our buddy, David Wright (www.davidwrightphotography.com) - his pictures of the cake are so much better than this one....he is a true artist.

This cake is also a blend of shapes with the bottom two tiers and the top tier being square and the second tier from the top, a round tier. The pattern is hand painted on the sides of the tiers with a pattern the bride liked. There are brown satin ribbons around the base of each tier and a double satin ribbon around the center of the round tier. The event was held at The Bellemeade Mansion (www.bellemeadeplantation.com) with Alice Hendry (www.alicehendry.com) as the coordinator and the caterers, Chef's Market in Goodlettsville, Tennessee(www.chefsmarket.com). The band for the event was The Blue Tones...truly a super band.... love them!!!(www.bluetonemusicusa.com)

Fun and Funky cakes

Hello:

This batch of photos from the last couple of months has fun and funky.

The next two pictures are the same groom's cake, but different angles. It is a chocolate cake with ganache icing......but sugar work on the sides that reflect the groom's interest. He plays bass guitar, likes to boat on Percy Priest Lake, rides his motorcycle in Laconia, and has a blue Corvette. The reception was at the bride's home. The caterer is our friend, Jim Hagy from Chef's Market. Chefsmarket.com

This wedding cake is a buttercream with sugar birds created from chocolate, with white sugar roses and feathers. This reception was held at the Holiday Inn on Elm Hill Pike.

The groom's cake in this photo actually belongs with the buttercream bird cake. It is cupcakes arranged like pool balls. The cue is sugar also.

Sometimes we do more than just wedding and groom's cakes. This 3D tooth was for a young lady graduating from Dental school. All the items around the base of the cake were sugar. This event was held at a swanky new reception venue in Cool Springs, Tennessee called Durego. durego.net

New June Photos

NEWS ITEM: our newest cake magazines are at Davis-Kidd and Border's Books. Please stop by and pick one up. Every cake in the magazine is a cake that we have created for someone. Like our website...there are no display cakes... only real ones :)

We are back to blog mania. These are just a few of the cakes that we delivered in June and July of 2010. There are so many more.... we have just been busy caking.....which is wonderful!!

This wedding cake went to our friends at The Union Station. It is a buttercream cake with fresh flowers. The design was inspired by the couple's wedding invitation.

The boots are a groom's cake for a groom who wore his boots completely out while on an expedition through the mountains. He came back and took a picture of his poor worn out boots. So, we created them out of cake, like the picture, for his wedding.

This was a little birthday cake for a former bride. We thought it was too cute not to put on the blog.

NOVEMBER CAKES

Hi Everyone!!
November this year had some super cakes. This is just a few of the ones we delivered this past November. More to come. :)

1) This cake was for a Grand Opening at the Belle Meade Winery. The chocolate wine bottles were created to look like their wine bottles with imitations of the actual labels hand painted on the bottles. The grapes are also white chocolate. An imitation of their actual brand is on the side of the crate - also hand painted.

2) Groom's cake for a base ball fan..... just kidding. The groom specified that the puck have the correct texture on the side with the official language...except instead of saying "Made in Canada" the puck said "Made in Detroit"

3) This is the wedding cake that went along with the Detroit Red Wing Hockey Puck Cake. The cake has rolled fondant design on the sides in two colors of ivory and the gold. Sugar flowers on the top of the cake. Check out how the cake is displayed....on glass raised with glass vases. The coordinator for this cake was Alice Hendry, the venue was The Hermitage Hotel. The florist was A Village of Flowers.

4) The next two pictures are of a Genie cake we did for The Hardin School's fundraiser held at The Factory in Franklin. It was "Laughter for the Children"
This picture is the entire cake with the Genie coming out of the chocolate lamp and coming to a stand. Most people didn't know it was a cake until Kix Brooks cut the cake!!!!

This photo is a closer view of the Genie laughing. The theme for the evening was a Magical theme with an Aladdin flair. The entertainment was comedians.....

5) This simple but lovely cake was ivory candy coating (fondant) with chocolate ribbons. Fresh flowers were the topper. This was a wedding cake for our friends over at Randi Lesnik events. The reception was held at "The Avenue" on 3rd Avenue. Such a beautiful venue.

6) This is the Standing Eagle cake for The Marines.

We have done the birthday cake for The Marines here in Middle Tennessee for the last five years and it is such an honor. We appreciate all the generous men and women who serve our Country...and love working with them.

This picture is of everyone who worked on the cake: Me, Stacy to the back left, Abby to the back right and my partner in cake crime, my mother, Dianne, in the center front.

This is a close up of the Eagle.......very fierce....ready to take a bit out of any terrorist!!! Every "feather" was put on one at a time....they are all dark chocolate.

September Cakes Continue

Hi everyone!

As you know, September was a busy month for wedding and groom's cakes....and so many of them were wonderful. Every cake we do at the French Confection is designed specifically for each bride. Some brides prefer cakes that are very simple and plain and others prefer cakes that are full of design and color. We love each and everyone one...plain or covered with flowers , bows or sugar designs....we love something about each one.

Simple and White

1) This first cake is just so elegant in it's simplicity. It is white buttercream white some white ribbons on the edges and fresh flowers on the top. This wedding was coordinated by our friends at Randi Lesnek Events. The reception was held at The Bellemeade Mansion.

Elegant and Fun

2) The next two cakes went to The Avenue which is a lovely venue on 3rd Avenue . The cake has silver accents and edible silver sparkles. The non-edible crystals were provided by the bride.
The groom's cake is obviously for a groom who stays at home and reads....just kidding. He is known for his large bonfires.....so that is what he wanted as a groom's cake. Him, on a log with a sugar hot dog, flask, camo pants and hat, backpack and tent next to this huge flame. This event was also coordinated by Randi Lesnek Events.

Blue, Black and Big Mac

3) This next cake went to The Airport Marriott and was lovingly cared for by their super wedding coordinator, Shirley. We are lucky to have such a close association with such great folks. We are part of this Marriott's wedding package. So, when you book your wedding at the Airport Marriott, you can choose one of their packages and get our cake, designed to your exact specifications, included in the package.

This wedding cake was created for a couple that met while working at McDonald's. The swag down the side of the wedding cake matched the bride's wedding color. The cake is single quilted with blue dots at the intersection of each quilt with a black ribbon around the base of each tier. The red fresh flowers bring the bride's other color into play.

The groom's cake was a Big Mac - in a Big Mac box. This cake fed 50 people, so you can imagine it how large the cake actually was. The board it is on is two feel in diameter. It is very Big, Mac.

Blue Elegance

4) This cake went out to The Factory in Franklin. The coordinator was Wendy Binns from One Source Weddings. They always do such a good job and again they completely transformed an empty space into a magical wedding reception.

The background of the cake is pearlized light blue with a wide black ribbon around the base of each tier The sides are single quilted with black dots at the intersection of the quilt on the bottom and 2nd tier from top and white filigree on the alternate tiers. The brooches on the cake were provided by the O.S. W.

5) Simba and Nala went to the Country Music Hall of Fame at the end of September. The wedding cake was designed like her dress except with a silver background (you can see a little of it in the background of this picture).

Grooms: These little characters were so much fun to create and I got to know the bride and groom just a little better because they took extra time with me to help me get the right look for the groom's cake. I even watched the movie (which I had never seen) to get into the right spirit for the cake ;)

Past Favorites:

This cake was a winter cake that went to Riverwood Mansion. The flowers are fresh and vary in size so that they can flow down the swags on the sides of the tiers. The sides sparkle with white edible glitter.

This fun little cake was based on a Colette Peters' cake from one of her wonderful books. This was for a birthday and the lady asked for the cake as it was in the book with some modifications to color. Everything is sugar. :)

SEPTEMBER CAKES ARE HERE!

September cakes!!! Well, at least some of them ;)

Hi everyone...boy it has been a busy end of August and September. We have done some incredible cakes and here are some of the pictures to prove it!!

Cute Country Wedding

1) The wedding and groom's cake below were for a couple that had the darned cutest country wedding ever! The wedding reception was at their church and it was beautiful -wood beams and ceiling - very charming!

Wedding Cake: her cake was based on the design of her dress with the color and the lace detail recreated on the cake. The flowers were fresh.

Groom's Cake:

His cake was an open Bible with his choice of verse hand painted

on the pages. You can see that the pages look like parchment and the side of the pages look like they are gilded in gold.

Cupcake Cakes!!!

Oh my goodness!! These are sooo cute. Each cupcake has dainty sugar flowers and leaves on the top of each cake in the bride's colors of light yellow and light blue. The cupcakes are displayed in laser cut cupcake sleeves.....so adorable! As if that weren't cute enough, she provided the butterflies that surround the little cakes. The event was held at The Governor's Club...which is a charming old southern plantation home.

Periwinkle Packages

3) This event has the prettiest colors of chocolate and periwinkle blue.

Wedding Cake: has three packages cakes in the bride's colors. The top packages holds a sugar replica of the bride's ring. Again, I know you are tired of hearing it, but yes, everything is edible.

Grooms' Cake: This is an air traffic control tower with a Marine Emblem on the top of the building.

LEGO MY GROOM'S CAKES

4) Some groom's (and workers) never grow up and boy is it a good thing! Hi Abby! This is one of our great and talented workers at the French Confection painting some of the little Lego people that are going to go on the groom's cake.

Ahhhh...the Groom's cake. Check this out - there are little Lego people building a castle. Some of the castle is in ruins, so the Lego workers are shoring up the sides. There is Lego grass, a Lego moat, Lego tools and ladders and little sugar Legos waiting for the "workers" to put on the sides of the castle. No detail was tooo small....ha ha.

Past Favorites!!

This is one of my favorite parts of the blog...because, we have been creating wonderful cakes for brides for about 8 years - and, of course, I think all of them (and the bride's that go with them) are just super....I like to share them with you.

This cake (above) was actually delivered the Saturday before my own wedding. It was initially inspired by a cake that the bride has seen in a magazine...however, we changed the colors to match hers and updated the flowers to be more like what she preferred. This cake was delivered to our friends over at Riverwood Mansion in April of this year.

The Crab!!!! Love it!!! Everything is edible...sugar that is:) The groom was from Maine, so we did a crab for him. The people at the wedding said that the crab looked like he was going to scamper right off of the table. The event was held at The Hermitage Hotel. The coordinator was Alice Hendry.

Boba Fett!!

This groom's cake went out to a home Brentwood owned by our friend, Cynthia Himmelfarb, for her daughter's wedding. Cynthia owns and runs one the best party rental business in Nashville. This is, of course, the groom's cake - her wedding cake is featured on our website, frenchconfectioncakes.com under Buttercream Cakes. It was lovely also. Notice, the dents and bangs in the helmet. We try to put as much detail in the cakes as we can....we want them to look like they are not real cake and I think we succeeded in this case!!

Welcome to our Second Blog!!!

These are the wedding and groom's cakes that we created for August 22, 2009.

Today's first cake (below) was created for Crystal. Crystal's entire theme was inspired by her desire for her event to be covered in crystals and sparkles. It was held at the War Memorial Building. Her colors were white and light blue - It was sparkly and it was beautiful!!!! This theme could have easily crossed over to "overdone" but it was executed with elegance by Alice Hendry (wedding coordinator) and A Village of Flowers. You can go to David Wright photography and see more pictures of her set up - truly stunning.

Her wedding cake was inspired by her dress and incorporated two of her design elements, circles and squares along with extreme sparkles. The topper for the wedding cake was piled up crystals around a candle.

The next wedding cake for this weekend fed about 398 people. This wedding cake weighed 100 pounds. The size of a small person!!!!

This cake was created for an Indian couple who held their event at the Airport Marriott. The wedding coordinators were Shirley Dixon from the Marriott and Helen Morrisette for the bride.

The design for the bride's cake was derived from the small detail that ran along the bottom of the couple's wedding invitation. The large swirl design on the rest of the wedding cake matched the background of the main table setting for the bride and groom. The flowers on the wedding cake (absolutely stunning) were provided by Enchanted Florists.

The groom's cake (below) Eagle, Globe, Anchor was for a groom who is a Marine. The cake was delivered to our friends over at The Palm Restaurant where the rehearsal dinner was held. It is always such a pleasure to work with any member of the military. We are so proud of all of them. The cake served 75 people - all of it was edible.

FAVORITES!!!

As you know, this is the section where we feature past cakes we have created sometime in our 8 years of cake creations.

This cake was created for an event that was held at The Avenue last fall/winter. The cake has embossed twigs on the sides of the tiers and a 3D vine that incorporates the brides colors and favorite flower - tulip poplar. The bride's theme was very earthy with moss, flowers and twigs in her decor.....and touches of copper. The florist for this event was Branching Out, Photographer was David Wright and coordinator was Alice Hendry.

This cake was created for a true burger connoisseur!! The size of the burger is about 14" in diameter and has everything on it! Everything on the burger is edible.

Cakes from August 15th Weekend

AUGUST 15TH EVENTS

1) It was so wonderful to work with the Fernandez family on the wedding and groom's cakes that were delivered to the Frist Center on August 15th, 2009. (Photo to left)

The wedding cake was based on the design from the bride's wedding dress right down to the sparkly flower designs on the sides of the wedding cake.

The groom's cake was books arranged as if stacked on a shelf with the two bookends being drums. The bass drum has the name of the groom's band on it "Sutures". The names on the spines of the books were suggested by the groom. This photo will be in another blog.

For this event: the flowers were by A Village of Flowers, the band was The Blue Tones and The Coordinator was Alice Hendry.

2) The photo to the right is a birthday party for Judy McCabe held at The Timothy Demonbreun house also on the August 15th weekend.

We won't say what number of birthday Judy was celebrating....but she sure didn't look her age.

It was such a pleasure to work with her on this very special day.

The style of the cake has white filigree lightly touched with silver. Each tier is separated for fresh flowers.

FAVORITE EVENTS AND CAKES

Since this is our very first blog, we have decided to include some of our favorite cakes from the past.

This cake is a groom's cake for an avid tennis player -A Louis Vittan Tennis Bag.

Everything is edible except the bottom portion of the racket and the strings of the racket.

The wedding cake to the right is a cake with a beach theme including handmade sugar sea shells and sugar tropical flowers....and.... a sugar Corona Bottle.

With ...yes, a sugar Lime... Cooool. You are correct, that is sugar sand around the cake.

Everything on this cake is edible.

The reception was in the wonderful hands of Randi Lesnik Events. Catering by The Standard.
